Online digital street maps for NZ

Help : Browse Maps

The Browse map feature allows viewers to Zoom in to a more detailed map, zoom out to a less detailed map and to pan around maps.

Pan

Panning allows the next map to be viewed north, south, east and west, as well as diagonally to the four corners, north-east, north-west, south-east and south-west.

Panning in any of the 8 directions will show the next map along at the same level. On occasions the next map across will not be available due to it being the ocean or lake, in which case it will not pan across.

Zoom In

To Zoom In down to the next level of map detail, move the mouse over the map area to be zoomed in on and click. If it is not the correct area, then Pan around until the correct map tile is found. There are a total of 7 levels of maps ranging from the highest level map, of the entire country to an area of 500 metres per displayed map. The entire country that has roads, is covered to the lowest level and you will be able to view country roads to the same level of detail as city streets.

The map level being viewed is represented on the right of the map, below the Pan navigation arrows, with the larger icons screen representing the higher levels. Maps are a standard size on the screen and at the different levels represent different Map Scales.

Zoom Out

To Zoom Out from a lower level map to a higher level the Zoom icons on the right of the map are used. The current map level is indicated by a red dot. Simply click the icon above the current level to Zoom Out. The higher level map will show the area where you came from near the centre of the higher level map. When Zooming Out, you can skip levels and go directly to the most appropriate level.

Map Scales

The maps displayed are of a standard size on the screen, 300 X 300 pixels, and represent a different scale depending on the map level being viewed. Level 1 displays a large area on the ground, while Level 7 shows a smaller area on the ground, although they are the same screen size. The scales used in MapZone follows:

Level 1

Level 2

Level 3

Level 4
