Street Number is a straight number excluding flat numbers, apartment numbers such as 23B, 76/E or 25/4. The system uses the first set of numbers only, and returns an error if non numeric characters (/ , - A B C ….) are entered.

Street Name expects the name of the street or road. It returns names that match the first characters at the beginning of the name. For example it would return the following names where “KING” is entered:
  KING
  KINGS
  KINGDOM
  KINGSFORD
  KINGFISHER
  KING EDWARD
  KING CHARLES
It would not find the names Viking, Mocking Bird, Packington or Turkington.

Street Type is whether it is a Street, Road, Way, Place, Lane, Crescent, Avenue and so forth. There are about 66 different street types.

Street Suffix is another identifier in addition to the street address such as North, East, West, Upper or Lower. This field is not often used but necessary to distinguish street names that have identical names within close proximity to one another.

City/District is an area defined by the Territorial Local Authorities (TLA) and these are the local authorities that administer much of the roading network. The naming of roads and allocation of street addresses is the responsibility of TLA’s. The area administered by each authority varies and may change from time to time. There are currently 75 TLA’s with valid values found in the City and Districts Table

The returned list of street names will contain additional information on the address, such as the District or City that the street is in. Click on the street or address line that matches what you are searching for to see it on a street map.

Cannot find the correct address or no matches found

When the system cannot find the street name that you are looking for then you may try one or more if the following:

  1. Try making it a more general search and not entering in the Type or district.
  2. Try a different spelling of the Street Name. The system does not allow phonetic spelling or homonyms presently. There are plans to introduce this particularly for Maori street or place names with unfamiliar spellings.
  3. Try entering the name in full or abbreviations such as:
       Saint for St Peters
       Mount for Mt Cook
       McDonald instead of MacDonald
  4. Type in only the first few characters of the street name. The system will find all names containing the characters entered at the beginning.
  5. If you know the area where the road is then use the drill down method starting from a high level and progressively identify the area that you are looking for.
  6. Identify an organization on the same street or road and see where they are. You may use Organisation Search for this.
  7. Look in the Yellow Pages for the organization name and use the street name from there.
  8. Look in the telephone White Pages for a person on the same street and use the street address in the telephone directory.
